Young Protester Holding Handwritten Love And Hate Message

A handwritten sign fills much of this photograph, but for me the face just above it is what gives the image its real weight. The message reads, “Hate Cannot Drive Out Hate Only Love Can Do That,” held firmly at both lower corners while the young protester sits among a dense gathering of people in Toronto. Her steady gaze rises above the sign, framed by loose dark hair, while another woman in profile, wearing a large flower in her hair, creates a second strong human presence immediately behind her.

I photographed this scene during the G20 demonstrations in Toronto, where signs, faces, gestures, police activity, crowds, and moments of stillness were constantly overlapping. Within my protest wall art photography, I am especially drawn to photographs where the political event becomes inseparable from an individual human moment. Here, the sign communicates the public message, but the expression above it keeps the photograph from becoming simply a record of words on cardboard.

The black-and-white treatment strips away competing color and strengthens the visual structure. The pale sign becomes a broad graphic field across the lower half of the composition, while dark lettering, hands, hair, clothing, and faces create strong tonal separation. Behind the two women, the street dissolves into softer figures, a bicycle wheel, moving bodies, and fragments of the surrounding crowd. That shallow depth gives enough information to understand the setting without allowing the background to overwhelm the central subject.

What interests me most is the contrast between the forcefulness of the handwritten statement and the quietness of the person holding it. There is no theatrical gesture here. The sign is direct; the expression is restrained. That difference gives the photograph a tension I find more compelling than a conventional image of chanting or confrontation.

I offer this photograph as a limited edition of only 10 prints. Each print is personally signed, includes a certificate of authenticity, and is produced with archival pigment inks on premium archival paper.

As wall art, I see this working particularly well for collectors of documentary photography, Canadian social history, political imagery, or black-and-white photographs centered on people and public life. It carries the visual impact of a protest photograph while remaining fundamentally a human street photograph, connecting naturally with my Toronto street photography collection.

Emily ★★★★★

I hung this print in my hallway and keep noticing the protester's expression above the sign—it really anchors the whole scene. The black-and-white finish makes the raw emotion stand out without distraction.

Aurora ★★★★★

The way the handwritten sign contrasts with the protester's calm, determined expression is striking—really captures that moment. The limited-edition aspect adds a nice collector's feel to it. Framed it in my study and it's already a conversation starter.

Isabella N. ★★★★★

The black-and-white finish makes the raw emotion in the photo stand out even more, and the limited edition number adds a nice collector's touch.
