Ruby Wine Suspended Against A Deep Black Background

Most of my photography is made out in the world, often while traveling with a camera and reacting to whatever unfolds in front of me. This photograph comes from a much smaller body of studio work where I could do the opposite: remove the outside world entirely and construct an image from glass, liquid, darkness, and controlled light.

A red wine glass dominates the right side of the frame, its curved edge defined by a narrow ribbon of white light. Behind it, a dark wine bottle rises almost invisibly from the black background. What gives the photograph its structure is the wine itself. A precise horizontal line of deep ruby red cuts across the composition, passing visually through both glass and bottle and connecting them as a single graphic form. The illuminated red reflection inside the bowl adds another shape, softer and broader, while the bottle remains deliberately close to silhouette.

That reduction is what I wanted from these rare studio photographs. I was less interested in making a conventional photograph of wine than in seeing how far I could strip the subject down before recognizable objects became abstraction. It places this photograph naturally within my still life wall art, but its real strength comes from the tension between what is visible and what disappears into black.

The color is deliberately restrained. There is no busy tabletop, label, cork, vineyard reference, or decorative prop competing for attention. Black occupies most of the frame. White defines the glass. Red becomes the visual pulse. Removing any one of those elements would fundamentally change the photograph.

I release this image as a limited edition of only 10 prints across all sizes. Each print is personally signed by me and accompanied by a certificate of authenticity. I print using archival pigment inks on premium archival paper, preserving the deep blacks, narrow highlights, and saturated ruby tones that give the photograph its character.

As wall art, I see this working particularly well in a contemporary dining room, wine room, bar, restaurant, or minimalist interior where the large areas of black can create a strong architectural presence without becoming visually noisy. From across a room it reads as bold geometry; closer inspection reveals the glass contours, reflections, and subtle transparency that make the image much more than a simple photograph of a drink.

For collectors drawn to wine as both subject and visual form, this photograph belongs naturally within my wine wall art.

Stella ★★★★★

The deep black background makes that ruby red wine just pop off the wall, exactly like in the listing photo. I keep catching myself staring at it during dinner instead of my plate — the contrast is that striking.

Miles ★★★★★

I’ve had this up in my dining room for a week and keep noticing new highlights in the wine as the light changes. The limited-edition print number on the back adds a nice collector feel.

Ellie ★★★★★

The deep black background makes the ruby red wine absolutely pop — it's almost hypnotic. I keep catching myself staring at it during dinner. The limited edition number adds a nice touch, feels special.
